Back to the Blitz

For 20 months in 1979 and 1980, a wine bar in London’s Covent Garden was home to a weekly club night that had an influence on alternative music and fashion which still resonates more than four decades later.

Founded by Steve Strange and Rusty Egan, Tuesday nights at Blitz attracted students from the nearby St Martin’s and Central art schools and other fashion-forward patrons who became known as the Blitz Kids. Strange ensured that only those who made an effort on their appearance gained entry, while Egan played eclectic DJ sets that encompassed glam rock, disco, post-punk, new wave, synthpop and more. The result was the creation of the scene and genre that was dubbed New Romantic.

BACK TO THE BLITZ will celebrate the music heard at the Blitz, as well as the artists that followed in its wake: David Bowie, Roxy Music, Iggy Pop, Sweet, Lou Reed, Mott The Hoople, Kraftwerk, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Giorgio Moroder, Donna Summer, Grace Jones, Sparks, Japan, Visage, Ultravox, Joy Division, OMD, ABC, Adam & The Ants, The Associates, Human League, Heaven 17, Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran, Culture Club, and a whole lot more.
